In the following dozen years the development of Maxwell's theory was carried further and the result was the paper published in I892, which is found in the end of the volume. The work of Boltz mann and Hertz dates from the same period. Lorentz took the view that matter was perfectly permeable to the ether and that the latter was invariably at rest. P. Zeeman and A.D. Volume 6 only. ; Lorentz is the man on whose shoulders Einstein is said to have stood, and he shared the discovery first known as the Lorentz-Einstein theory of relativity. This paper presents a summary and an analysis of the work of Hendrik Antoon Lorentz in the field of kinetic gas theory. It appears that as one of its characteristic traits this work shows a strong influence of Ludwig Boltzmann, which was reinforced by the personal contacts between the two men.
